Against The Machine
Typographic poster series
Research:
Revolution. Three poets have made distinct impacts on the world of poetry; opening the eyes of readers and encouraging new realizations. Albeit each poet exists in a different period of time or space, the intentions of each are clear: to critique present society in hopes of building an improved future. T.S. Eliot was a 20th-century poet who made his mark post-World War I. His work questioned society, with his early work attacking the fearful and panic-filled post-World War I society. Later in life he created his most famous work: Four Quartets. Eliot became known as one of the great modernist poets. Andrea Abi-Karam is a modern-day poet who uses activism to inspire their work. Most famously, they have written sets of poems in response to violence, nationalism, patriarchy, and militarism. Code-Davinci-002 is a representation of what the future may hold: an OpenAI Scientist. The generated work is organized in poetic form, and offers its own opinions on the current state of mankind and the future. “The result is a startling, disturbing, and oddly moving book from an utterly unique perspective” (HachetteBookGroup.com (I am Code).
Method:
I used distortion to lead the methodology of this project. The main focal point of each design is the typography that was created during our experimental type workshop. To create the main headline, I used separation by staggering cutout lettering horizontally and vertically. For the “The Machine” part of the headline, I crumpled up the slightly wet paper to give it texture and a distorted look. I used the threshold adjustment layer as a technical aspect to give it a bolder look. Stylistically, I ewnt with a bold punk look. After researching each poet, I noticed that there were commonalities between them. Each poet was an activist, strived to be different, and helped cause poetic revolution. To stay true to these findings, I wanted to be as bold as possible. I leaned into a high contrast look that was dominated by black and white. I used fusion to mix in high contrast black and white imagery as well. Going back to the idea of being bold, I stressed the eyes and close-up facial shots of each poet. Each poet had a unique perspective on how they see the world, so that was the reason why I stressed eyes. I used repetition as a background piece. I took my three themes that I identified which were revolution, activism, and change, and repeated them. I then used it as a texture in the background of each. To polish the posters I added some texturing to my black and white tones. I did this because to match the bold, rugged theme. I added bold color subtly to break free from the heavy black and white. While messing with the type, I created a hierarchy through size and weight to distinguish what was important.

The Brief
“You have 3 CHOICES of movie to design for. You've got 3 DAYS to design at least one poster for one of the below films. Each has a short log-line, and comparison to similar films, to give you a sense of genre. We have also supplied some images which you are free to use. You are NOT REQUIRED TO USE THESE ASSETS! Feel free to use your own photography, or stock imagery, in composing your poster or posters. Think of a copyline (headline) to include in your layout. Make up names of actors who might be starring in these fake movies - whatever delivers inventive artwork that markets these films as though they were real.”
Movie Choice
“In 2007, 4 co-workers realize that each of them has evidence of embezzlement, insider market-fixing, and murder committed by the partners of the mortgage bank they all work at. Together, they decide to take down and break free to start their own firm to right the wrongs committed by their bosses.”
Rationale
After reading the brief for this project, the solution became clear. Through a horror-inspired approach, great emotion and interest could be conveyed by leaning into the darker side of the movie description.
